Application Requirements

To apply to become a CSPT, a candidate must be a PTCB CPhT in good standing. In addition, CPhTs must either complete a PTCB-recognized sterile compounding education/training program and have one year of work experience in sterile compounding; or have 3 years of work experience in sterile compounding.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the CSPT exam and have a qualified supervisor complete the Competency Attestation Form within the one-year Candidacy Eligibility Window.

The CSPT Exam is a two-hour, 75-question multiple choice exam. One hour and 50 minutes are allotted for answering the exam questions and 10 minutes for a tutorial and post-exam survey. The exam covers hazardous and non-hazardous Compounded Sterile Products (CSPs) in the following domains:

  • Medications and Components (17%)
  • Facilities and Equipment (22%)
  • Sterile Compounding Procedures (53%)
  • Handling, Packaging, Storage, and Disposal (8%)

Official score reports are typically available within three weeks from your exam date. PTCB cannot expedite the processing of exam results or certification information.

From program launch on December 6, 2017 through July 31, 2018, the CSPT exam passing rate was 74%.

Apply For and Schedule Your CSPT Exam

Apply for CSPT Certification

To become a candidate for CSPT Certification, you must apply at Once your application for CSPT candidacy is approved, you will be granted a one-year Candidacy Eligibility Window. During this time period, you must complete all CSPT Certification requirements, including pass the CSPT Exam.

Schedule Your CSPT Exam

Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization To Schedule email from PTCB that tells you you have 90 days to schedule and take the exam. The email will include the ‘begin date’ and ‘end date' of your authorization time period. If you are unable to schedule and take the exam during this 90-day period, you are required to withdraw your exam application to avoid paying all fees. You may reapply to take the CSPT exam later as long as you do so within your one-year Candidacy Eligibility Window.

  • Any CSPT candidate who is unsuccessful in passing the CSPT exam may retake it provided the candidate is still within their one-year Candidacy Eligibility Window and has not exhausted four attempts at the CSPT Exam.
  • Candidates who fail to complete the CSPT Certification requirements within their one-year Candidacy Eligibility Window are required to reapply for eligibility and pay the application fee again.

Recertification Requirements and Fees

Recertification Requirements

CSPT recertification is required every year, while CPhT recertification is required every 2 years.

To successfully recertify, a CSPT must be a CPhT in good standing, complete 5 hours of continuing education in sterile compounding, and submit a Competency Attestation Form completed by a qualified supervisor. The 5 hours of continuing education in sterile compounding required for CSPT recertification each year will be counted toward the 20 continuing education hours required for CPhT recertification.

Recertification Fee

A $20 recertification fee is due only once every 2 years (during the “off” CPhT recertification year).
